Crafting a contemporary visual language for one of the oldest and most renowned auction houses

Project

Founded in London in 1793, Bonhams is one of the oldest and largest auctioneers of arts and antiques. Ahead of it’s sale, Bonhams sought to demonstrate a clear vision and strategy for the business to entice potential private equity firms.

Bonhams engaged KBS Albion to overhaul their digital ecosystem and to validate a new digital service that would connect Bonhams Experts to customers in novel ways.

I led the visual design and provided a light-touch update to the Bonhams identity.

A design audit uncovered a high degree of sameness between the Big Four auction houses and a gap analysis revealed a number of ways in which to improve Bonhams’ visual language. Incorporation of distinguished typography, generous spacing, diverse layouts, subtle embelleshment, and steadfast attention to detail has resulted in a design language that is differentiated, contemporary, and serves to elevate Bonhams.

Bonhams was acquired by Epiris in 2018.
